My Buggy Story...

It all started in 1987... I was 13 years old..

VW Manx Beach Buggy (16) www.beachbuggy.org.uk .jpg (108124 bytes)

The car was stripped and the Chassis shortened for a Rat Beach Buggy...

Eventually in 1999 I was ready with my chassis..  I was a bit older by now..

VW Manx Beach Buggy (14) www.beachbuggy.org.uk .jpg (200600 bytes)

I re-built the Chassis in October 1999...

The used Rat Shell was sold and a lovely new Manx UK Shell was purchased...

I got the new shell in March 2000 and took 6 weeks to throw it all together...

It was finished in April 2000 ... (well it had an MOT)

We collected the New Manx Body Shell from Mel Hubbard in March 2000

This was one of the first UK Manx shells built .... Numbered Shell number 5 ... you can tell its a real ID tag - Valley is spelt wrong!

VW Manx Beach Buggy (67) www.beachbuggy.org.uk .JPG (132066 bytes)

I bolted it down.. this was before the days of the internet and forums for beach buggies  ... I had to do it myself and work it out... there are plenty of things I would do different now... The pictures were taken on a very early digital camera...

Apr 08, 2009 -Fitted my "new" Sprint Star Wheels at the weekend... They are standard 5 1/2 inch wide front and rear..

VW Manx Beach Buggy (72) www.beachbuggy.org.uk .JPG (212460 bytes)

May 02, 2009 - The "new" 1641 has been fitted about a year... today I rebuilt the left carb and it actually runs properly...                and its got lots of omph!

So I decided to take the headlights off

Months later, the headlights are back on...

VW Manx Beach Buggy (73) www.beachbuggy.org.uk .jpg (180851 bytes)

But I don't use it enough and started playing with exhausts... as it wasn't running right...

i put a tri mill bob cat on... too noisy and too much popping...

Made a stinger up... the popping stopped..

But the carbs were making it surge...

Bought a pair of cannons...

They don't fit with the carbs...

Obtained some Dell DRLA 36s...

They almost fit with the cannons... but one needs "tweaking"

Clean new carbs... set one on fire... throw it and burning rag on floor... break manifold..

Get pissed off...

Put car away and forget about it..

Aug 22, 2009  - Months pass...

Wake up Friday surf buggy website...

Realise its Buggy meet on Saturday...

Panic!

Dig buggy out... Start playing with carbs / manifolds and exhausts...

Nothing wants to fit together other than the broken manifold...

Find man at the other end of my street who can ally weld...

Throw the whole lot together... (fight the thing for hours!)

Throw away cage, fit belt guard and Number plate to that.

Make roller pedal out of skate board wheel...

It works...

Goes like a wild thing...

But popping and banging...

Make the Ace Cafe meet... with the SDBC - Southern Dune Buggy Club

23rd August 2009 -  I'm up early (ish) and in the workshop...

Carbs back off..

beat the living hell out of the fan housing so the carbs no longer hit it...

"adjust" the linkage with a grinder so that doesn't foul the fan shroud either... :o

new gaskets on the right carb and all jets cleaned...

back together...

Quick (2 1/2 hr) Trip to airport to deliver sister ...

back home and more tests...

much better...

but still some slight leak on the right... manifold to head...

Engine hot, so decide to change the leaking push rod tube..

Burn arm on hot cannon...

Take off exhaust to get rocker cover off...

Discover a load of broken bits in rocker cover...

fit new push rod tube...

rebuild rocker shaft with new washers and clips...

Bung it back together...

In-laws arrive... drink tea, chat about the pond in the garden... go out for food...

Buggy still not finished... :o

Sun Sep 20, 2009 - got a run out today.. Went to the Croxley green Classic Car show.

Image

Tue May 11, 2010 - I bought a roof for it..

It didn't fit.

I've chopped, cut, glassed and bolted and now we have the first fitting and test drive...

The roof stays on at at-least the national limit

Mon Aug 02, 2010  -  So on Saturday afternoon I phoned Steve - Pruplebug and threw down the gauntlet...

Dug the buggy out, dipped the oil checked the tyres and gave it a wash...

Sunday morning we cruised with the Herts VW Club to north weald.

VW Manx Beach Buggy (79) www.beachbuggy.org.uk .jpg (161408 bytes)

Signing on and scruteneering was easy and just 20.

We headed for the Track, we both have 1641cc Buggies, his is a pampered polished pet, mine isn't... Who won?

Well, I didn't make it to the start line for our first run! = I broke my accelerator pedal in the burnout box

Luckily with a bit of steves spare accelerator cable and a screwdriver... we fixed it...

and we were off again, they let us slip straight back in at the head of the queue!

I ran a 16.90 @ 75mph - in 3rd... Beating Steve at the top end by about 1/2 a second.

My times for the day were -

16.9 @ 75mph
16.88 @ 70.7 mph (tried 4th gear at the top of the track)
16.75 @ 75 mph
16.65 @ 75mph
16.54 @ 75 mph

I raced steve each time and he was often quicker away from the line, but my buggy had the longer legs at the top of the track and beat him each run, just... Steve started shedding weight and getting quicker, but never quite got there.

The 1641cc engines made for close races which was fun.

However, the buggies were used for the bug push and Steve won all 3 of them!

18/2/13 - The Beach Buggy Forums are now closed.

I would like to apologise to all the regular friendly users of the Buggy Forums.

I have met some great people through this forum.

I have for many years been the subject of assumptions and "abuse" from the minority.

Every critical email, forum jibe (or similar) hurts just that little bit more.

The senders seem to think its a game, they don't realise what they are doing to the receiver.

I guess that is what you get for running a Free Forum for people.

Those who have never done it always know how to do it better than you do.

I've always said that "its all my fault" .. it seems that some still think it is.

The tin foil hat brigade always think you have an ulterior motive.

The forums have been a part of my life for 11 1/2 years.

After the recent few weeks of events and then the threat of legal action, the sad decision has been taken to close the lot down.

I can only apologise to the many - it is the few that have ruined it for you.

I don't have the energy to go on arguing with them, nor can I stand being branded as a Liar.

I never claimed to be good at running the forum, but I ended up doing it to help out a little.

I guess I should have given it up long ago, but didn't want to let you all down.

I have had enough.

I haven't used my buggy in nearly 2 years and have lost the love for the "Buggy Scene"

I have never got anything out of it financially. It has always cost me money to provide and obviously many man hours.

Thank you to Tim for the technical help over the years and Stephen for the determination to fix it.

I'd like to thank you all for your support and positive contributions over the years, it was always the members that made it great.

Thank you particularly for the huge number of emails and phone calls in support these last few days.

I'm Sorry it is gone.

I have no more energy left to fight this battle.

Sorry

Julian
